The Faculty of Letters engages in education and research to stimulate interest in the cultures that have been developed by humans and to shed light on the depths of human existence from various perspectives. By training students to identify and pursue their own interests academically, the Faculty aims to cultivate specialists possessing deep insight and a broad range of knowledge relating to the humanities. The Faculty therefore seeks applicants who possess the following qualities.
Applicants are sought with the following qualities and abilities:
- Students with a keen sensibility and imagination.
[Required competences: critical thinking, good judgement and expression; interest and motivation] - Students with a wide range of interests and curiosity about languages and cultures, human behavior, and history and society.
[Required competences: knowledge and technique; critical thinking, good judgement and expression; interest and motivation] - Students with fundamental academic skills, especially logical thinking, expressiveness and reading comprehension skills in Japanese and foreign languages, and information literacy.
[Required competences: knowledge and technique; critical thinking, good judgement and expression] - Students who can discover and explore problems on their own without being bound by established values.

- Applicants should have acquired the following abilities in high school, etc.:
- Japanese Language: Reading comprehension skills and the ability to express oneself accurately.
- Geography and History/Civics: A wide perspective and comprehensive knowledge. Ability to analyze and understand various social phenomena.
- Mathematics: Ability to think and express ideas mathematically.
- Science: Ability to understand nature in a scientific manner.
- Foreign Language: Reading comprehension skills and ability to express oneself in a foreign language. Communication skills in a foreign language.
Basic Policy for the Selection of Students:
To select students in accordance with the Diploma Policy and Curriculum Policy of the Faculty of Letters, the following examinations are administered to assess applicants’ competences.
- In General entrance examination, knowledge and technique; and critical thinking, good judgement and expression are assessed.
- In ”Kokorozashi” special entrance examination, knowledge and technique; critical thinking, good judgement and expression; initiative and cooperativeness; and interest and motivation are assessed.
- In Special entrance examination for privately funded international students, knowledge and technique; critical thinking, good judgement and expression; initiative and cooperativeness; and interest and motivation are assessed.
- In Entrance examination for third-year transfer students, knowledge and technique; critical thinking, good judgement and expression; initiative and cooperativeness; and interest and motivation are assessed.
